So... I subscribe to Charlie McDonnell on youtube. Some of you may know him. He's from England and is "internet famous" for painting himself purple and drinking ketchup and doing a few other kind of stupid things. His latest video, however, is all about his hometown of Bath. He mentions how it's a beautiful place, and as such, many tourists will come to see its marvels. But he didn't want to show his viewers *that* Bath. He wanted to show them *his* Bath. I thought it related pretty well to what we did with our maps of Edmonton.
"Thoughts From Home" by Charlie McDonnell
I use YouTube frequently, and I have to admit I've never come across his channel before, so thanks for sharing that. I think you're right that it does relate to our map project really well, only that his video dealt more with nostalgia than our assignment did. It's really interesting to see how nice some of these smaller places are that I'm sure a lot of people have never heard of before. Bath looks like such a sweet place to live; cozy and incredibly scenic.
ReplyDeleteI just enjoy his acknowledgment that Bath is incredibly scenic, but what he shared were his memories that built the foundations for his home within the city.
ReplyDeleteI especially like that most of the events he described are things that many of us have experienced as well, just linked through memory to a different place... Things like the walking route to primary school, the location of the first kiss, the church he used to go to, the park he played in all the time. It's just fascinating how many experiences individuals share, but these individual experiences in conjunction with the locations associated with the experiences shape not only ourselves, but our personal representations of the places. The same "big" events in peoples' lives create many different interlocking worlds.
